MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin lost starting QB Graham Mertz early in the second half in a 38-17 loss to Michigan on Saturday at Camp Randall.
Mertz was injured after being sacked by the Wolverine defense on the opening drive of the second as the Badgers were trailing 13-10. That’s as close as the game would get as Michigan rattled off 25 unanswered from that point on to put the game on ice.
Backup QB Chase Wolf did manage a late 4th quarter touchdown pass to Clay Cundiff.
The Badger offense sputtered for most of the first half. With 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Michigan was outgaining Wisconsin 122 yards to minus-2.
Mertz had eight completions for 115 yards and one TD with no interceptions at the time of his injury. Wolf recorded 52 yards and one touchdown to go with one interception in his time.
No Badger running back gained more than 20 yards against the Michigan defense. Fond du Lac native Braelon Allen led the way with 19 yards.
Jack Sanborn led the defense with 13 tackles.
Michigan remains undefeated on the season at 5-0, 2-0 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin drops to 1-3, 0-2 in league play.
The Badgers will head to Champaign next week to take on Illinois for the Illini’s homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM, pregame coverage will begin at 12:30 on WSAU.
