SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9FM THE GAME) – I look forward to the homecoming football game every year. It’s my favorite day of the season.
And the day felt snake-bit this year.
The homecoming parade was interrupted because of a medical emergency along the visitors bleachers.
The Evergreens fumbled the opening kick-off and gave up a short-field touchdown three plays later.
And it seemed like Everest was chasing the games’ events and playing from behind all night. Twice in the game Everest settled for field goals, only to have Rapids score touchdowns on their next possessions.
Rapids was the more opportunistic team — they scored two touchdowns off Everest turnovers. And they had a very effective game plan. Using their extra wings as blockers freed up the running game all night. Rapids completed only one pass all night, and it went for a 38-yard touchdown. Everest’s defense loaded the box to stop the run, and the receiver snuck in behind the linebackers. Rapids put the game out of reach with a field goal of their own with 5-minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The pleasant surprise of the evening was the return of Beau Svoke, who’d been out with a leg injury since week four. He took some of the offensive reps, and played well. Ty strehlow, injured last week, was limited and spent an extended time on the sidelines after diving for an incomplete pass in the first quarter and came up lame.

The entire D.C. Everest family mourns the loss of Kurt Schmitz, who was rushed to the hospital after falling ill on Friday night.
During the time that I knew him, Kurt loved watching his grandchildren play for the Evergreens. His grandson Brady Ueckert was the Evergreens starting quarterback in the 2015 season, and played an outstanding center-field for Everest baseball. During the spring season, one by one Mr. Schmitz grandchildren would find their way up to the press box and tell him how many hits they had.
Kurt Schmitz was a director for the Everest youth football program for many years, and was part of the Friday night chain gang — a thankless job during cold weather.
During the time that I knew him he always had a kind word and a friendly smile.
We all extend our condolences to the Schmitz and Uekert families.
