MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Badger football coach received a retroactive pay raise of $800,000 on Monday. The raise dates back to an agreement after the 2020 Rose Bowl. It was put on hold at the time due to the pandemic.
The UW Board of Regents approved the annual increase as well as moving up the $100,000 escalator clause in his contract.
UW athletic director Chris McIntosh said on Monday that Chryst was the sixth highest paid coach in the Big Ten and deserved a raise. He said that Chryst actually took a pay-cut during the pandemic as the athletic department worked through the loss of revenue.
McIntosh said he also knows the timing of the announcement is awkward as the team has struggled this season but notes that the decision on this was made back in February of 2020.
