ST. PAUL, MN (WSAU) — Minnesota United’s Allianz Field has been selected as the host venue for the 2022 Major League Soccer All-Star game.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced the venue on Tuesday alongside MNUFC owner Bill McGuire and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter.
The game is scheduled for August 10th, 2022. The opponent for the MLS All-Star team will be announced at a later date, along with ticket information.
Major League Soccer has historically taken a different approach to its All-Star Game than other leagues by selecting one all-star team instead of two. The MLS side then plays another international opponent, most recently an All-Star team from Mexico’s top-flight Liga MX. In previous years the MLS All-Stars have played a top European club such as Manchester United or Bayern Munich.
Allianz Field opened in 2019 at the corner of Interstate 94 and Snelling Avenue in St. Paul at the site of a former MetroTransit bus barn. The venue has played host to all MNUFC home matches since then along with a handful of games involving both the United States men’s and women’s national teams and one college football game.
It’ll be the first professional All-Star game hosted in the Twin Cities since the Minnesota Lynx hosted the 2018 WNBA showcase. The Minnesota Twins hosted the 2014 MLB All-Star Game, the Minnesota Wild and Timberwolves hosted the NHL and NBA exhibitions in 2004 and 1994, respectively.
