WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Wausau Police Department held an active shooter training Monday to make sure business owners are prepared for the worst case scenario.
Participants learned different methods of how to run, hide or even defend themselves from an active shooter. They also learned how to detect warning signs in a person and potentially prevent a shooting from ever happening.
Patrol Lieutenant John Phillips told WAOW-TV that these situations are rare, they still happen. “We understand that we can’t just say hey this is small town Wisconsin and it doesn’t happen here. So we need to be prepared for it as well,” Phillips said.
While Phillips said no situation is completely by the book, he hopes this helps owners develop a plan that fits their workplace. “I hope they’re able to take the information and go back to their organization or their workplace and look at it critically and say are there improvements we need to make, do we have a plan,” he said.
Wausau PD plans to hold at least one more active shooter training this year. The date hasn’t been set yet.
