SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9FM THE GAME) – Everest coach Tim Strehlow had the quote of the year in today’s pre-game interview.
“I don’t think we’ve played our best game yet.”
It’s something unusual to say in week 8 of the season. It’s also true.
Each one of the Evergreens losses has been a game that was competitive at halftime, and turned against them late in the fourth quarter. Each one of the losses is a game that championship teams find ways to win. Even if the Evergreens spilt half of their late-game flops, they’d be playing for a 6th or 7th win tonight.
Instead Everest plays their final scheduled game of the season tonight against Hortonville.
The Polar Bears and Appleton-West volunteered to play in the western division of the Valley Football Association two years ago. They escaped some of the tougher football programs in the Fox Valley, and locked themselves into longer road trips. A year ago, when these teams met earlier in the season, Hortonville was an unfamiliar opponent that had rolled up a lot of passing yardage in their earlier season games. Everest dominated the line of scrimmage, racked up a lot of sacks and pressures, a rolled to a lopsided win. Everest is much more banged up this year, and may not generate enough big plays to blow anyone out. But the team’s blitz gets home often, and should control the game up-front.
This late in the fall, Everest is still an unknown. They could be a blowout winner tonight. Or they could give up too many big plays and lose, and finish the season below .500.
Or they could get into the playoffs and be the best 4-win team in the field. Their best game of the year could come in the post-season.
