WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Months after the demolition of the Wausau mall, the DNR has confirmed that there are a variety of contaminants at the construction site.
The DNR says they have found low levels of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the soil. DNR Hydrogeologist Matthew Thompson says they predict the contaminates are due to fill that was used when the mall was originally built.
The DNR says the contaminates are low risk, but they are mitigating the situation to make sure nothing spreads, adding the original slab for the building should be enough to contain it.
“What used to be the floor of the mall is still there is still intact it was important for us to keep that in place as we move forward,” said Thompson.
The contaminants should not impact future developments.
