MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — For the first time since 1982 the Milwaukee Brewers have a Cy Young Award winner.
The award, which goes to the top pitcher in each league, goes to Corbin Burnes. The 27 year old led the majors with an ERA of 2.43. He was 11-5 this season while striking out 234 over 167 innings and holding opponents to a .201 batting average.
Burnes had three highlights this year that might have seperated him from the other finalists. He combined with Josh Hader on a no-hitter, he set a major league record by striking out 58 batters before issuing his first walk, and he matched a major league record with 10 straight strikeouts in a game.
He out-polled Zach Wheeler and Max Scherzer for the honor. Robbie Ray of Toronto won the AL award.
He’s the first Brewer to win the honor since Pete Vukovich did it in 1982.
