WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — With the city of Waukesha still processing the events that unfolded during its holiday parade this past weekend, some towns are making changes to their own planned parades.
The Wausau Holiday Parade, planned for Dec. 3rd, will go on with increased security measures according to the event’s organizer, Wausau Events. Executive Director Alissandra Alderholt tells WAOW TV they are working with the city’s police, fire, and public works departments on what that looks like.
“These plans are not new plans, they are plans that have been in place for previous years, it’s just updates need to be made, as situations arise.” said Aderholt. “We expect these plans to be fluid but also prepare us in case anything is to happen.”
Police Chief Ben Bliven told WAOW their job is to make sure that the community can enjoy the parade in peace.
“Obviously our role is to provide for the safety and security of that event, an we will do as much as we can so that our community members can enjoy a safe and fun event.” said Bliven.
The changes aren’t just safety-related, Wausau Events plans to host a candlelit vigil following the parade for victims in Waukesha.
“We will have Mayor Katie (Rosenberg) and Santa light the holiday tree on the 400 block, and then we will have a candlelit vigil taking place in honor of the victims of the Waukesha holiday parade.” said Aderholt.
Wausau’s holiday parade is scheduled for Dec. 3rd, they do intend to continue safety and security discussions as the date moves closer.
Some communities including Marshfield and Stevens Point have already had their Holiday parades. The Wisconsin Rapids parade is set for Wednesday evening.
