MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WSAU) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers played spoiler on Saturday, topping Wisconsin 23-13 and sending Iowa to the Big Ten Championship Game to play Michigan next week.
The Badger rushing attack failed to get into a rhythm during the game, accounting for just 62 of the team’s 233 yards on the day. Braelon Allen accounted for most of those yards (47 on 17 carries). Graham Mertz went 21/38 for 171 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The latter came on a jump ball that was simultaneously caught by both a Badgers receiver and Minnesota defender but upon review, the officials stuck with the on-field call of a pick.
Collin Larsh nailed two field goals but missed a third when the ball struck the front of the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. Scott Nelson recorded a 25-yard pick six in the second quarter that gave the Badgers a 10-3 lead.
The Badger offense failed to score a touchdown in the game.
Wisconsin now awaits its bowl bid to be assigned by the Big Ten office. That will be announced by December 5th following the release of the final College Football Playoff rankings and the selection of the national semifinalists for the CFP. According to the Badgers sports information department, the Music City Bowl in Nashville and Las Vegas Bowl appear to be the favorites at this time. Both games are played on December 30th.
