We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago……
The second solo record of 1971 for Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher was a bit different than the first. He went into the studio and tried to capture more of a “live” sound to get a more high energy record. At times he succeeds.
The album “Duece” is a nice mix of electric and acoustic blues with the acoustic stuff showing a country-folk influence as well.
“I’m Not Awake Yet, “Out Of My Mind” and especially the Dylanesque “Don’t Know Where I’m Going” (which features Gallagher on harmonica) do a good job of showing his versatility.
That’s not to say the LP doesn’t rock. The opener “Used To Be” and the closer “Crest Of A Wave” stand out and a couple of other tracks, “Whole Lot of People” and “In Your Town” feature some nice slide guitar.
Gallagher is joined by Gerry McAvoy on bass and Wilgar Campbell on drums and the pair is fine although a review of the record in Rolling Stone called them “hacks”.
Gallagher would bust out in the next couple of years with a “live” album and some solid studio LPs as well and this effort gets largely lost in the shuffle. It’s fine for what it is but he did better down the road.
