MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Add Wisconsin to the list of states that has a reported case of the Omnicron variant of COVID-19.
According to the State Department of Health Services, the variant has been confirmed
DHS says the person who tested positive is an adult male from Milwaukee County. He is vaccinated and has received a booster shot, and is reporting mild symptoms with no need for hospitalization.
“We’ve been prepared for this news and will continue trusting the science to help keep Wisconsinites and our communities healthy and safe,” said Governor Tony Evers. “Now is the time to double down on our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, including the Omicron variant. I urge all eligible Wisconsinites to get vaccinated and receive a booster dose as soon as possible and to follow the latest public health guidance.”
The news came as DHS is also investigating an outbreak of the disease that occurred following a wedding celebration in Milwaukee, where 12 people tested positive. All of them traveled to the wedding from their homes in California. All have reported mild symptoms, and none have been hospitalized. Health officials say all of the individuals were vaccinated against COVID-19, and most had received boosters.
DHS says the two cases are unrelated.
