MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Add the Badger women’s hockey team to the list of programs that’s had their schedule impacted by COVID-19.
Wisconsin’s weekend set against the University of St. Thomas has been postponed due to an outbreak of the virus within the Tommies’ program. The two sides do intent to make up the WCHA games at some point this season if conditions allow. Badger Head Coach Mark Johnson says what’s making matters worse is a difference in COVID-19 policies between the two Universities.
“They (UST) are in this ten-day window where they have to quarantine,” said Johnson. “With our rules, it’s half that. So they are trying to navigate what they can do to get enough players [to] practice and play. Right now they are not in that position, nor will they be this weekend.”
Coach Johnson says it’s possible the Badgers could make up one or both of the games during upcoming trips to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis or St. Cloud State University.
St. Thomas is the newest Division I athletics program. The Tommies, located in St. Paul, were voted out of the Division III Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for being too successful in several sports. After the NCAA granted them a waiver to move directly to Division I, a process that typically takes ten or more years and involves a layover in Division II, they found a home in the Summit League for most sports with men’s hockey joining the re-worked CCHA and women’s hockey landing in the WCHA.
