WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Marathon County homicide suspect will go to trial later this year.
Michael Turner was in court Tuesday where Judge Suzanne O’Neill scheduled a two-week jury trial for November 28th-December 9th, 2022. Charges against him include first-degree intentional homicide, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two drug charges.
Police accuse Turner, 45, shot another man on May 15th, 2021 near the intersection of 5th Avenue and Thomas Street. The victim went to a nearby business for help and was able to identify Turner as the shooter.
Turner left the scene and police issued an attempt to locate (ATL) for him and his vehicle. He was later found in Marquette County where officials were able to take him into custody without incident.
The victim was hospitalized in critical condition for several weeks and died on June 2nd. Investigators say the two men knew each other, though it’s unclear what the motive was for the shooting.
Turner also faces one count of battery by prisoners for an incident that happened while he’s being held at the Marathon County Jail, that charge has been wrapped into the charges from the May 15th incident in Wausau.
Two other court dates were also set ahead of the November trial. Turner will be back on June 24th for a motion hearing and October 31st for a jury status hearing. In the meantime, he’s being held on a $1 million bond.
