RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The SAFER Fire District has received new thermal imaging technology to help keep firefighters safe in the line of duty.
SAFER acquired MSA Lunar devices, which are thermal imaging cameras that help give firefighters more visibility in situations involving heavy smoke and flames.
It comes after nine firefighters have died battling blazes in the U.S. already this year.
It can help them see where a fire stared, and if there’s anyone in the building. Additionally, they help search teams find a downed firefighter by giving location information as well as setting off an alarm.
SAFER’s deputy chief says this is an extra layer of security for his team. “The job is inherently dangerous, you’re never going to eliminate that,” said Josh Finke. “But if we can have as many tools as possible to make it as safe as possible then at the end of the day, the goal is for everybody to go home safely.”
He says it’s likely other area departments will purchase these devices too, which will help when they work together.
The new devices went into service Tuesday.
