EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – People living in the Northland Pines School District will be asked to renew an operational referendum during the February 15th primary election.
The district’s $4.6-million referendum currently in place will expire at the end of this school year.
It’s asking voters to approve a new three-year non-recurring referendum for the same amount. Scott Foster is the Northland Pines District Administrator: “The first year your taxes will remain the same or go down very slightly. The second year they’ll go down a little bit more and then the third year, they’ll actually take quite a drop. Not because of the operating referendum, which is still forecasted to go down a little bit more, but the middle and high school building will be paid for during the second year this next referendum.”
The middle and high school building referendum was one separate from the operational referendum that voters passed several years ago.
This new operational referendum will help maintain the level of education and programs the district offers, pay for a school resource officer, and provide the funds for new roofs at St. Germain and Land O’Lakes Elementary schools.
Foster says investing in the schools is about more than securing children’s education. “When you have high quality schools in the community, people want to move here. That means in this labor shortage people are looking to come to our community, work in jobs, property values based on the quality of your schools. Having a great school keeps their property values and a good reputation for the community and attracts people to come here.”
The referendum questions will appear on the ball for the February 15th for everyone who lives within the Northland Pines Schools District. There is an informational meeting tonight at 6:30 at the High School/Middle School building.
