WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau School District is informing parents that drinking water will soon be filtered. It comes in response to reports of PFAS, or forever chemicals, in all six of the wells that supply drinking water to Wausau.
The school district has already temporarily turned off drinking fountains, and is allowing students to bring their own drinking water to class.
The district now says starting Thursday, at least one source of drinking water will have a new filtration system installed in each affected school.
A notice to parents on Wednesday said: “We would like to share an update with you about the installation of point-of-use water filtration systems following the discovery of PFAS in the City of Wausau’s drinking water supply. By Thursday morning (2/17/2022), at least one system will be installed in each of the affected schools. Please know when installation is fully complete all schools will have multiple systems.
The point-of-use water filtration systems mitigate PFAS – ensuring safer drinking water for both students and staff. They will stay in our schools until the new City of Wausau’s water treatment plant is online.”
There are some elementary schools that don’t get water from the Wausau Water Works. Hewitt-Texas, Maine, Rib Mountain, South Mountain are not affected.
