MENOMINEE, Wi (WSAU) — In a shocker Friday night, the UWSP mens basketball team, which didnt win a conference game in the WIAC all season, knocked off UW-Stout in the first round of the WIAC Tournament 85-83.
Garrett Nelson scored five points in the final second of the game to give the Pointers the win. He finished with a game-high 23 points.
The Pointers trailed by three with less than a second left on the clock when Nelson was fouled while attempting a game-tying three-pointer. He hit all three free throws to tie the game at 83. He then scored on the ensuing inbound play after a turnover for the win.
Three other Pointers scored in double figures. Zach Mootz had 16 and Brady Wagner 15 while Jake Buchanan added 14.
The unlikely win leads the Pointers to a Tuesday matchup at #3 seed UW-La Crosse on Tuesday.
The UWSP womens basketball team dropped an 82-79 double overtime game with UW-River Falls in the WIAC Tournament Friday night at Berg Gym.
Taylor Greenheck led four player in double figures with 18. She also had 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.
Jessica Slowik had 14, Alexa Thomson 15, and Courtney Krueger 13 for the Pointers.
UWSP finishes the season with a record of 11-11.
