MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers says the federal gas tax should be suspended for the rest of the year.
Evers and four other Democrat governors sent a letter to Congress, saying that temporarily eliminating the 18.4-cents per gallon that the federal government collects would lower prices for drivers immediately.
Evers says the Gas Prices Relief Act would also mandate that oil companies pass the savings from the tax suspension on to consumers, not keep the money for themselves.
“Wisconsinites can’t wait for relief—they need help today. I’m urging Congress to find common ground and take action now to help lower gas prices so we can make sure families, farmers, and small businesses can make ends meet,” Evers said in the release.
Wisconsin also has a state gas tax — 30.9 cents per gallon. Ever did not call for it to be suspended. Those funds go into the state’s transportation trust fund to pay for road projects.
Gas prices have risen more than 70-cents in the past week, and are over $4 per gallon in many parts of Wisconsin.
