MEXICO CITY, MX (WSAU) — The United States men’s national soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Mexico on Thursday night in Mexico City.
Coupled with Panama’s 1-1 draw with Honduras, the US is in better shape to earn a trip to the World Cup in Qatar this summer.
The US had a couple of good chances to score in the match but both Christian Pulisic and Jordan Pefok missed from close in.
With two matches left, the US and Mexico are tied for second place in the Group behind Canada, with the US ahead in goal differential by three.
Canada lost to Costa Rica 1-0 which allowed them to move past Panama into fourth place, three points behind the US and Mexico.
The United States will clinch a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a win on Sunday against Panama combined with a loss or draw by Costa Rica in their fixture against El Salvador. The US can also advance with a draw against the Panamanians and a loss by CRC.
Of the eight teams in the final qualification group for North and Central America and the Caribbean, just five remain alive for a spot in the World Cup. The top three in the group will advance directly to the tournament, the fourth-place team will play an international playoff this summer against the winner of the Oceania qualification group, which will likely be New Zealand, for one of the last spots in the 32-team tournament.
