CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) Maybe you remember this story from months ago, when the new COVID pill was released. It was a therapeutic that greatly reduced your chances of being hospitalized.
And because it was available in limited qualities, it would be rationed. In several larger, liberal cities, it was rationed by race. Blacks and other minorities would be prioritized for the new treatment, because they were considered “disadvantaged”. Whites would get the pill only after minorities were treated.
That’s hooey. If someone is so sick that they show up at the hospital, they should get whatever treatment that they need regardless of ethnicity. Even if an emergency room was acting under triage protocols, they’d treat patients based on medical needs. You wouldn’t say only after the people of color have their wounds dressed and their broken bones set – then, we’ll move on to the white patients.
Something like that happened in Wausau. When the city decided to give out filtered water bottles, there weren’t enough to go around. People were told to call City Hall or reserve one through the city’s website. You’d be called when it was your turn. But… several dozen of the scarce filters were given to the Southeast Asian Community Center. No waiting there. Just come in and pick one up.
Because in Wausau, the Hmong are considered “disadvantaged.”
The Hmong should be insulted. They first arrived in Wausau nearly 50 years ago. Their children are third generation… Americans. To say they’re disadvantaged simply is not true. They are just as capable of making a phone call or going to a website as you or me. To imply they aren’t is offensive.
With this weak thinking – if there was an African American Community Center in Wausau, or agencies for Hispanics or Native Americans… would they go to the front of the line too? What happened to a fundamental American idea — that when dealing with our government, we’ll all be treated as equals?
