WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — One of the suspects in the Christian Schauer homicide case will be sentenced in July for one count of first-degree intentional homicide.
Jared Carl was in Marathon County court on Tuesday where his sentencing date was set for July 25th at 1:15 PM.
Carl was originally scheduled for sentencing on April 11th but that was rescheduled due to a scheduling conflict with his defense team.
The 20-year-old pled guilty to the charge as part of a plea deal reached last winter. He faces a mandatory life sentence with only the possibility of parole to be discussed at sentencing.
Carl is accused of killing Schauer and leaving his body in the McMillan Marsh in December of 2020.
Two other people are charged in the incident as well including Carl’s father, Shawn, who is said to have helped Jared conceal Schauer’s vehicle. Audrey Benson is also charged with hiding a corpse.
Initial reports showed that Shawn Carl killed Schauer. But new testimony from Benson pointed to Jared committing the crime.
The case went unsolved for several weeks following the discovery of Schauer’s body until a tip from the public led investigators to find his vehicle on Carl’s property in February 2021.
Shawn faces charges of aiding or harboring a felon and resisting an officer along with other drug-related offenses. He’ll be in court on April 27th for a pretrial hearing. Benson faces charges of being a party to the crime of homicide and hiding a corpse, she has a five-day trial scheduled to begin on July 18th.
