The Green Bay Packers have convened their off-season workout and conditioning program. Players checked in Monday morning during a mid-April snow shower. Seems like old times on the tundra. Head Coach Matt LaFleur will have his team in the building for the next couple of weeks with conditioning drills taking place inside the Don Hutson Center.
Not everyone will be in attendance. Most notably, Aaron Rodgers is expected to skip the off-season training but LaFleur says he won’t stress out over attendance at least in the early going.
LaFleur hopes Rodgers does come in when on-field installations commence during organized team activities later this spring especially with what will be almost a completely new cast of wide receivers. In the meantime, the first phase of the off-season program is all about getting a read on the physical condition of the team after they’ve been away for almost three months.
Rodgers will likely be working on his golf game. It’s been announced the MVP will team up with Tom Brady and play against Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in “The Match”, a 12 hole match play event put on by Turner Sports on June 1 in Las Vegas to raise money for charities.
A half dozen players checked in after signing their exclusive rights free agent contracts tendered earlier. Linebacker Khrys Barnes, tackle Yosh Nijman, tight end Dominique Dafney, wide receiver Malik Taylor, offensive lineman Jake Hanson and linebacker Randy Ramsey are all back on the one year deals.
Receiver Allen Lazard has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender for a reported 3.25 million dollars in 2022 but he’s expected to do so.
Speaking of receivers, details on Sammy Watkins contract have been released. According to Over The Cap, the 9 year veteran will earn a base salary of 1.12 million dollars in 2022 with a pro-rated bonus of $350,000.00. He has a workout bonus of $50,000.00 and per-game roster bonuses of $330,000.00. The cap number on the one year deal is at $1,772,353.00.
LaFleur also completed his coaching staff, naming John Donovan as a senior analyst on defense. Donovan comes to the Packers with an offensive background however, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at the University of Washington for the past two years. Donovan spent four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars working with tight ends and quarterbacks. He’s also coached at Maryland, Vanderbilt and Penn State.
