MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The City of Marshfield is exploring its opportunities to host Afghan refugees.
One of the leaders of Wausau’s resettlement committee, Eric Yonke, spoke at UWSP-Marshfield’s campus Tuesday to highlight recent resettlement efforts in the state and outline what could happen in the future.
It is unknown if any refugees will come to Marshfield since it depends on how many the federal government allows into Wisconsin. “We’re supposed to, our number for our office is to receive about 40 more Afghans and we think if we get 40 more, that’s going to be the most we’re probably going to get in the next round. We’ll see,” Yonke said, who serves as the co-sponsorship coordinator for the Wausau Ethiopian Community Development Council.
The first wave of Afghan resettlement saw 70,000 refugees enter the country, which ended in February.
