ANTIGO, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – The Antigo Public Library will be installing a solar panel array on its roof later this summer.
It recently received a $230,000 grant to help cover the majority of the project costs. The grant comes from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission’s Energy Innovation Grant Program.
Library Director Dominic Frandrup says they had applied a couple times before getting it. We went into this project in 2020 and we’re like ‘okay, well this sounds really fun.’ And now it’s like, ‘we’re really going to have to do it.’ It should be really exciting. I’m really thrilled.
Solar panels will go up on three sides of the roof. The project also includes three Tesla Powerwalls that will act as battery backup. “We’ll be able to support our critical infrastructure in case of power outage. That’s been a huge thing the past couple years. We should be able to keep our public wi-fi running since that’s a fairly low voltage. So if there’s ever a disaster and people are in need of internet they’ll have a place to get to and they can still connect with their family and loved ones and the power company.”
The project start date is in August and should take about two weeks to install.
