MEDFORD, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of striking an Amish buggy in Taylor County, leading to the death of one woman and injuring several children, has reached a plea deal with the State.
Skyler Opelt entered no contest pleas to five counts on Thursday including homicide by negligent use of a vehicle and four counts of reckless driving-causing great bodily harm. A judge then found him guilty, and scheduled sentencing for August 15th.
Opelt ran into the horse-drawn buggy in the middle of the day while driving on Highway E in the Town of Little Black last December. A 36-year-old woman was hospitalized and later died from her injuries, several children were also injured in the incident.
Opelt was non-responsive when officers arrived on the scene and had to be revived with Narcan. After coming to he refused to help first responders at the scene, according to a witness.
The buggy was carrying a total of ten people at the time of the crash. Nine of them were injured.
The 36-year-old also reportedly admitted to doing some sort of drugs before driving that day.
He’s being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
