NEW LISBON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the victim of Friday’s shooting incident in New Lisbon along with the shooter.
Authorities say 56-year-old Douglas Uhde shot 68-year-old John Roemer, a retired judge. When first responders arrived at the scene they found Uhde barricaded in the basement of Roemer’s home, refusing to come out. Specialized tactical crews did eventually make contact with him.
He remains hospitalized with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As of Saturday, he was still in critical condition.
Investigators add that the shooting was a targeted incident and there was no danger to the public. Judge Roemer may have been the first of several victims Uhde was targeting, many of whom were state or national lawmakers.
Attorney General Josh Kaul says those individuals have been contacted and there is no threat to their safety at this time.
