A pair of public safety issues in Portage and Marathon Counties will be discussed on Tuesday.
First, the Stevens Point City Council and Police and Fire Commission will both consider an agreement to provide fire protection services for the Village of Park Ridge beginning later this week.
The Village board began drafting an agreement with the City in mid-June, citing the resignation of their Fire Chief and others within the department.
The City Council will take up the proposal at 11:30. It will also go to a special meeting of the Police and Fire Commission at 2. If approved, the agreement would go into effect on Friday.
The agreement is being called a stop-gap, it’s unclear what the long-term plan will be for the village.
Later in the day, the Wausau Police Department will go to the city’s Finance Committee to request a unique incentive for officers that are nearing retirement. According to the agenda for the meeting, Deputy Chief Matthew Barnes will propose offering a $2,000 incentive for those who put in a six-month notice for their retirement, instead of the standard two-month notice.
According to a memo from Barnes to the committee, the extended notice would help control officer overtime by allowing replacements to come on board during the retiring officers’ notice period. He says that would control overtime costs and allow them to train while the retiring staff is still working.

The Finance Committee will discuss the issue at 5:00 PM at City Hall.
