WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Metallic Mining Committee heard a presentation from Green Light Metals on Tuesday as the group looks to investigate a gold deposit in the Town of Easton.
“We want to make sure the practices that they use will follow the state code,” said Ron James, speaking on behalf of the group before Tuesday’s meeting. “It’s a very sensitive area, there are class 1 trout streams, there are outstanding and exceptional resource waters, and groundwater is at the surface here.”

James adds that the group prepared a three-minute statement for public comment during Tuesday’s meeting, which he says he hopes will lead to members of the County Board asking the right questions about the proposed mine. He adds that he also wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to talk with Green Light Metals about their concerns.
“It would be great to speak to them, see how they are going to comply with [state law.] This drilling is very, very risky.”
He also notes that there could be PFAS found in some of the fluids used for exploratory drilling, which many municipalities in the region are already dealing with in their drinking water.
