WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The City of Wausau has hired a liason officer, a non sworn position under the police department, that will deal with issues revolving around the unhoused population of the city.
The Wausau Pilot & Review is reporting that the city has hired Tracy Rieger, former director of Community Homeless Facilities at Catholic Charities as a community outreach specialist.
City Hall and the Wausau Police Department have been dealing with complaints about homeless folks in the downtown area. Police Chief Ben Bliven suggested the new position at a meeting of the Finance Committee in May.
One of the problems confronting the city is the lack of affordable housing in the area. There are reports that Catholic Charities has expressed interest in keeping the warming center/shelter that they operate in the colder months open all year round. The Council has asked for a formal proposal from the Police Department as to the cost of that proposal.
