The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee will consider a city-wide ban on large-scale commercial animal breeding facilities in the city, also known as puppy or kitten mills.
According to Monday’s meeting agenda, the ordinance aims to prevent residents from coming into possession of a pet that was born and bred in an unhealthy environment. Animals that come from these mills oftentimes have health or behavioral issues due to circumstances such as minimal veterinary care, inadequate feeding, and a lack of socialization.
The ordinance would not impact pet shelters such as the Humane Society of Marathon County. It would also not impact stores that do not sell animals, and instead, work with shelters and rescues to host adoption events while selling food and other pet supplies.
Violators of the proposed ordinance could be fined up to $500 for each animal they sell.
The matter is part of tonight’s regular Committee meeting which begins at 5:15 at City Hall. To see a copy of the proposed ordinance, click here.
