WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau will install up to 20 license plate scanners starting in January.
The Wausau City Council voted 7-2 to accept grant money for the new crime-flighting tool at their meeting earlier this week. The technology is being leased, not purchased. Each camera costs about $2,500.
Wausau PD says the scanners can also be used in missing person cases and can track down criminals faster.
A Wausau bank robbery suspect was caught in Illinois with the help of a local license plate scanner. Green Bay PD say license plate data helped them arrest a homicide suspect.
Some 20 police departments around the state already use the technology.
Deputy Police Chief Matt Barnes noted that 70% of all crimes involve a vehicle.
