IOWA CITY, IA (WSAU) — Nate Van Zelst and Keontez Lewis provided the offense for Wisconsin in a 24-10 loss to Iowa on Saturday.
Van Zelst cashed in a 32-yard field goal attempted early in the game, while Lewis was on the receiving end of a 51-yard touchdown catch from Graham Mertz with time running out in the first half.
Iowa got a pick-six from LB Cooper DeJean. He also set up a short field with a 41-yard punt return.
Mertz finished the game 16/35 for 176 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Braelon Allen led the ground game with 40 yards.
Following the game interim HC Jim Leonhard addressed rumors that Allen could enter the transfer portal, saying he believes other teams may be “tampering” with players by trying to persuade them to enter the portal early. Allen did address the situation with the media following the game as well, saying he’s had no contact with other schools.
Rumors have circulated which say Allen could transfer to another Big Ten school, namely Michigan, following the season.
The Hawkeyes retained the Heartland Trophy with the win and moved to a tie for first in the Big Ten West division. Wisconsin (5-5, 3-4 B1G) still needs a 6th win to clinch full bowl eligibility. However, it’s unlikely that there will be enough 6-win teams this year to fill all bowl slots, meaning there could be some five-win clubs who fill those games based on academic progress rates.
The Badgers will take on Nebraska next Saturday in Lincoln. Kickoff time has been set for 11 AM, pregame coverage will begin at 9 on WSAU.
