WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The first meeting of Wausau’s new Executive Committee was rescheduled to Monday after an alderman questioned whether such a meeting was legal.
A report from the Wausau Pilot & Review says alder Tom Killean sent an email questioning whether the meeting violated quorum and open meetings laws. Killean’s email says if more than five council members attend, the committee meeting is subject to open meeting laws.
The new committee, proposed by Mayor Katie Rosenberg, would be made up of the chairmen of all of the city’s other committees. Where one alder chairs more than one committee, another committee member would be invited.
The committee was supposed to meet last Thursday, January 5th. It was postponed an hour before it was scheduled to begin.
A revised agenda says it will be a joint meeting between the Executive Committee and the city council as a ‘Committee of the Whole’. The agenda also notes that no official actions will be taken.
Some critics of the Executive Committee have said that it gives too much power to committee chairs at the expense of other council members.
