Voters in Stevens Point may once again be tasked with giving the city’s public works department permission to take on two road projects, along with a possible referendum to cover a projected budget shortfall in 2024.
According to a memo from Comptroller-Treasurer Corey Ladick included in Monday’s agenda packet, the council will consider two versions of the question. Those would allow the city to exceed levy limits by 2.5% or 3.0%. He also notes that the city is exploring other options to deal with the projected shortfall, including a transportation utility.
Further discussion on those could come in the near future, but the council must decide on a possible referendum question this month to place it on the April ballot.
The same goes for the two proposed 2024 road construction projects. Those include a complete reconstruction in the area of Bliss Avenue and Maria Drive- road surface, sidewalk, curb and gutter, and other infrastructure. Both are valued at more than $1 million, therefore are subject to the terms of the 2022 referendum which requires the city to seek voter approval for any transportation project which exceeds that mark.
The proposals will be discussed as part of Monday’s city council meeting. To see the agenda packet materials, click here. Again, if passed the questions could go on the April 4th general election ballot.
It should also be noted that tonight’s meeting will be held in the community room of the Police Station on Michigan Avenue beginning at 7 PM.
