ANTIGO, WI (WSAU) — A Langlade County jury has found Derek Goplin guilty of killing his mother in 2021.
Court records show the court proceedings wrapped up Monday afternoon, and the case went to the jury at around 4:15 PM. Court was called back into session at around 6 PM where they delivered a guilty verdict on all counts.
Goplin stabbed his mother, Susan Reese, during an argument in October 2021. He then left the house with his five-year-old son, who was later found wandering alone at a hotel in the Milwaukee area.
Goplin was on the run for a few days before being arrested in Racine County.
The trial lasted six days. Goplin did not take the stand in his own defense.
He now faces a mandatory life sentence for the first-degree homicide charge. A presentence investigation will be completed before the sentencing day, which was not immediately scheduled.
