MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Merrill man has been sentenced for failing to remit employment taxes totaling over $850,000 to the IRS while he was working as CFO of an electronics recycling company.
Kevin Shibilski was found guilty of failing to pay the taxes while he was part-owner of 5R Processers. According to prosecutors, he was involved in deciding which bills to pay and not to pay while serving as the CEO/CFO of the company.
As part of his punishment, Shibilski will serve nearly three years in federal prison and three years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay $200,000 in restitution.
US District Judge James Peterson noted that the lengthy sentence was warranted to make a statement that prison is not just for drug dealers and that people who willfully fail to pay appropriate taxes to the IRS will go to prison.
