WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Curling Club is making final preparations to host the 2023 USA Curling Club Championships this March, marking their first time in the national spotlight.
Club Publicity Chairman Jim Force says they are one of the only facilities in the region that’s equipped to handle a tournament of this size.
“Wausau has one of the best and largest curling centers in the United States,” said Force. “We have eight sheets, most clubs don’t have [that many], they might have six, or four, or even two. They are looking for a club that can handle this many teams.”
A total of 24 clubs will participate including four from Wisconsin. Two will represent the Wausau Curling Club and the other two will represent clubs from Eau Claire and Madison as the state champions. Other teams will come from as far away as Alaska, New York, and Houston, TX.
While the event won’t feature the big, nationally-known names in curling like John Shuster or McFarland, WI native Matt Hamilton, Force says you can still expect to see top-level skill and strategy on display. He adds that it’s entirely possible that one or two of the athletes could eventually compete for a spot on a US Olympic team as well.
This is the first time the club will host an event of this size and Force hopes that it won’t be the last.
“We have great parking, a great location, and a great club room. A full kitchen, a full bar, locker rooms, and a spectator area that can seat 150-200 people. We are the kind of club that gets invited to host these national championships,” said Force.
Admission for the tournament will be $5 per day for adults and $15 for a four-day pass. Force says there will be both student and senior discounts, and those under the age of 10 will be free. A full schedule of events is available by clicking here.
