MADISON, Wis. – (WSAU) — For the 10th-straight season the Wisconsin women’s hockey team heard its name called on Selection Sunday when the field was announced for the 2023 NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship. The Badgers will head to Hamilton, New York, for a regional semifinal game against Long Island University on Thursday.
UW and LIU will meet at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday in a game at the Class of 1965 Arena with the winner to face ECAC tournament-champion Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. The winner of the regional will advance to the 2023 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four in Duluth, Minnesota.
This marks the 17th NCAA tournament appearance for the Badgers, which ranks second in NCAA history. UW also punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament for the 10th-straight season, which is the longest active streak in the country and is the third-longest streak in NCAA history.
UW holds a 2-0-0 record against LIU, playing the Sharks during their inaugural season during the 2019-20 campaign. The Badgers defeated LIU 10-2 on Oct. 18 in Syosset, New York, and 12-0 on Oct. 19 at Nassau Coliseum, the former home of the New York Islanders. The Sharks, which will make their first NCAA tournament appearance after winning the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance regular-season and tournament titles, are coached by former Badger Kelly Nash, who’s in her first season at the helm of the program.
The Badgers have only met Colgate once in program history, as UW dropped a 4-3 double-overtime contest to the Raiders in the semifinal round of the 2018 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four in Minneapolis. Colgate won the 2023 ECAC Tournament thanks to an 8-2 win over Clarkson on Saturday and are led by Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top-10 finalist Danielle Serdachny, who has 70 points this season.
