MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin’s starting five carried them to a 75-71 win over Liberty University in the second round of the NIT on Sunday.
Chucky Hepburn scored 29 points to lead the Badgers. Tyler Whal added 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Steven Crowl scored 14.
The Badgers got just four points off their bench. Liberty was led by 31 points, six rebounds, and four assists from Darius McGhee.
Wisconsin shot 54% from the field and 1-15 (7%) from three-point range. Liberty finished 47% from the field.
Liberty finishes the year at 27-9 and 15-3 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Wisconsin is now 19-14 and has won back-to-back games for the first time since December.
The Badgers travel to Eugene, Oregon on Tuesday for a quarterfinal matchup with the University of Oregon. Tip time from Eugene is set for 8 PM central, pregame coverage on WSAU will begin at 7 PM. The winner advances to the NIT semifinals, which will take place in Las Vegas.
Wisconsin is the last Big Ten team standing in the NIT after Michigan fell to Vanderbilt in the second round on Saturday. The Commodores will take on Alabama-Birmingham in the quarterfinals.
The other two quarterfinal matchups feature Cincinnati against Utah Valley University. The Wolverienes upset Colorado in the second round in Boulder. Oklahoma State will host North Texas in the last matchup.
