MIAMI, FLA (MetroSource-WSAU) — Japan has claimed its first World Baseball Classic title since 2009.
Japan defeated the United States 3-2 at LoanDepot Park in Miami on Tuesday night for its third WBC title in the fifth-ever Classic.
Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout in the final at-bat to secure the win and earn the save. Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto both homered in the win for Japan.
Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber both hit solo home run shots for the U.S. in the losing effort. Merrill Kelly was charged with the loss on the mound after allowing two earned runs in just over one inning pitched.
The sixth iteration of the WBC is scheduled to be played in 2026.
