WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man found guilty of killing his son was handed the mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison on Friday.
Ronnie Lofton Jr. was in court for his sentencing hearing after he was found guilty at trial back in January. Judge Gregory Strasser did not grant the 42-year-old the opportunity to apply for parole.
The boy’s mother said she found him unresponsive after she returned home from a shopping trip. The boy was rushed to a Wausau hospital, then airlifted to Marshfield Children’s, where he died a few days later.
The boy had been in Lofton’s care while she was out.
According to doctors, the boy had numerous injuries including several broken ribs, some of which were in various stages of healing. Some of the injuries were comparable to those that would be sustained by an adult in a high-speed car crash.
Lofton has several prior convictions including battery, burglary, and disorderly conduct. He was free on bond at the time of his son’s death.

In addition to the life sentence, Lofton will also pay court costs including a DNA surcharge. At least eight people gave victim impact statements including a representative from The Women’s Community, who appeared on behalf of one of the victims.
Lofton also gave a statement to the court before Strasser revealed his sentencing decision, according to court records.
