WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The city of Wausau will once again suspend its lawn maintenance ordinance for May in the name of pollinators.
The city council approved ‘No Mow May’ on Tuesday as part of the consent agenda for the regular council meeting. Mayor Katie Rosenberg says that means residents can feel free to not cut their grass for the entire month if they so choose.
“We had a lot of people come in to ask ‘Are we going to do it again?’ And the answer is yes. If you want to, feel free to not mow your lawn [for the month] and you will not get a city citation,” said Rosenberg following Tuesday’s meeting.
This marks the 3rd year that Wausau has implemented No Mow May for those who want to participate. The first go-round in 2021 required participants to register and post a sign in their yard declaring their participation. In 2022 city leaders voted to do away with registration and signs.
She says the move is not meant to be a divisive one among neighbors, so she hopes that everyone will be respectful of others in the process. “We hope that you have a good relationship with your neighbors. [Or if you aren’t] on similar sides of this you can agree to get along for the month.”
No Mow May was first introduced in the Oshkosh area. Rosenberg says there are still studies being done on its effectiveness.
