BROWNSVILLE, TX (WSAU) – A migrant teen died while in U.S custody on Friday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, confirmed by Fox News but did not identify where.
The migrant was identified as 17-year-old Honduran Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza by a Honduran official, who said that he was staying at a refuge in Safety Harbor, Florida. Eduardo Reina, the foreign minister of Honduras, demanded an “exhaustive investigation” into the fatal accident.
“The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our heart goes out to the family, with whom we are in touch,” HHS told Fox News.
“As is standard practice in any situation involving the death of an unaccompanied child or a serious health outcome, HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Division of Health for Unaccompanied Children (DHUC) is reviewing all clinical details of this case, including all inpatient health care records,” the message continued. A medical examiner’s probe is currently underway.”
The HHS has not released details on the deceased migrant youth due to safety concerns.
