The Wausau School Board is scheduled to meet in a special meeting on Monday regarding personnel.
Monday’s agenda includes the approval of separation agreements including contract terminations, resignations, and salary decreases. The group will then go into closed session for discussion with the district’s legal team “concerning strategy to be adopted by the body with respect to litigation on discrimination matters in which it is involved or is likely to become involved.”
It’s unclear if Monday’s discussion will have anything to do with the situation surrounding East High School Band Director Rob Perkins, who was recently the subject of an investigation into allegations that he used racist and homophobic language towards a student. While the district found that students were “let down” by the incident, they haven’t confirmed what happened and he was allowed to return to the classroom.
The family of the student in question has appealed the results of the district’s investigation to the state Department of Public Instruction. The DPI has also opened its own investigation into the incident.
The board heard more than 90 minutes of public comment on the issue from more than two dozen speakers at their regular meeting last Monday. The next day the district announced that the board intends to open its own investigation into the incident.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM in the Nicholson Board Room at the Longfellow Administration Building. Public comment is not part of the agenda, and the board is scheduled to reconvene in open session to take action if needed.
