WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A California man accused of swindling thousands from Marathon County residents in a grandparent scam will no longer face charges.
On Monday Judge Suzanne O’Neil dismissed three felony counts of theft by false representation against William Comfort. Court records show the charges were dismissed through a prosecutor’s motion.
Each charge carried increased penalties due to the age of the alleged victim along with a party to crime modifiers.
With the dismissal the case is now closed and Comfort is presumed innocent.
Charges had stemmed from a series of incidents last summer where residents were contacted by someone posing as a bondsman or attorney, telling them that a family member was in trouble and needed bail money. The person would then show up at the victim’s home to collect.
It’s unclear what led to Monday’s dismissal.
