CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Today let’s look at court rulings and media coverage of abortion. Take note how the presumption is that abortion is good, and that taking away any “rights” from women, even the right to kill an unborn baby, is bad.
The people of Iowa, through the elected representatives, passed a fetal heartbeat bill. Abortion shall be illegal there as soon as an unborn child’s heartbeat is detected – after about 6 weeks. Governor Kim Reynolds, elected on a pro-life platform, signed the bill on Friday. It was blocked by a judge on Monday. The will of the citizens of Iowa, expressed by who the elected to serve them, is blocked. Instead some unwritten right (Iowa’s constitution says nothing about the right to an abortion) is sacrosanct over a duly passed law.
Surely you remember when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade a year ago. The breathless media coverage was that “a woman’s right to an abortion was being ripped away,” or that “a girl born today has fewer rights than her mother or grandmother.” Rare was the news copy that read how the Court was correcting a wrongly-decided case from decades ago.
The presumption is that all rights are good, even if they offend the sensibilities of large swaths of ‘the people’.
Sean Hannity said on his radio program that we will never have an outright ban on abortion in the United States. The day that I’ve been praying for will never come. California, New York and Illinois – big liberal states – will be sanctuaries and will encourage pregnant women to come there for abortions. Even in states where abortion is banned women will quietly be able to get pills from mail-order pharmacies to end pregnancies. And there will be places like Minnesota, where liberals have complete control over state government, where a baby can be extinguished up to the moment of birth. Hannity said “abortion is a matter of the heart.” He’s absolutely correct. The political battle can’t be won until more people realize that killing an unborn baby is immoral.
Even in Wisconsin where our forefathers banned abortion in 1849, look how liberal judges in our courts will contort themselves to deliver rulings where the law doesn’t say what it clearly says. We already have a ruling that says medical abortions are legal here. Soon the liberal majority will tell us that because a law is old that it offends modern sensibilities. We’re not too far removed from the hippie-1960s. If it feels good, do it. Keep your morality to yourself.
