MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – According to Molly Beck of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Milwaukee Brewers are “contemplating” moving as talks for taxpayer-funded upgrades to American Family Field are ongoing.
If elected officials are unable to agree on a package for improvements to American Family Field, which is required in the team’s lease with the state, the Brewers may begin exploring for a new home as early as this fall, Beck noted.
The lack of a deal “has pushed Brewers officials to the point of contemplating whether communities with fast-growing populations but no Major League Baseball teams might be options if state and local officials don’t produce enough funding for stadium renovations,” Beck continued.
The Brewers’ lease expires in 2030, and the organization has proposed $448 million in upgrades to meet the terms of the team’s agreement with the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District.
“The Brewers genuinely want to stay; it is only a question of whether they’ll be able to with the stadium district broke,” a source familiar with negotiations told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The team has been in Milwaukee since 1970 and moved to American Family Field (then Miller Park) in 2001.
