MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Despite strong interest from another National League team, the New York Mets hung on to one of their top players as the trade deadline passed.
The Brewers “made a significant push” to acquire Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso before the trade deadline, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The sources cited by Rosenthal said, “The talks advanced to the point where the teams were within ‘field-goal range’ of a trade.” The Brewers “understood they would need to part with at least one of their top five prospects” to get a talent like Alonso, according to the article. When Milwaukee acquired veteran Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 27, their push for Alonso came to an end.
With 39 home runs and 95 RBI this year, Alonso is the Mets’ leading hitter and would undoubtedly get attention from teams around the league if they decide to make him available again.
