MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Help is needed for replenishing a variety of pine trees around the state.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says their supply of red pine seed is running out, so they’re asking people to collect pinecones from red pines to refill their supply.
The agency says they’ll pay $125 per bushel of properly collected and unopened red pinecones at the mature stage where the color has just turned brown.
The DNR says the supply of seed has run out since there hasn’t been a good cone crop over the last few years.
Though red pines can be found throughout the state, they’re most abundant in the sandy soils of central, northwest, and northeast Wisconsin.
